An artisan's hands working metallic thread into a flower on dark cotton
Phulkari Hand Embroidery · Haryana

Flowers worked in thread,
by the women who keep the craft

PESHAS brings together the embroiderers of Haryana and the work of their hands — Phulkari, Bagh and fine needlework carried from one generation to the next. Every piece is stitched, never printed.

The tradition

Phulkari means flower-work

From phul, flower, and kari, work. In many homes the embroidery was begun by a mother at the birth of a daughter, stitched slowly over years, and given to her at her wedding. The favourite motifs are the mor-morni — peacock and peahen — the lotus, paisley and the open flower.
